Happy birthday!

Hello, readers, after what I know has been a long silence. While I work on my next "serious" blog entry, I thought you'd enjoy this photo and a cultural tidbit.

Here in Santa Cruz, at least in the MCC office, birthdays do not go by unnoticed. (Even if you would really like them to.) One classic east-Bolivian custom particularly popular around this workplace is the "birthday cake on your head." Basically, this means the special person of the day gets eggs broken on top of his/her head and flour dumped over the top--while everyone else laughs and takes pictures. Such was the fate of David, a volunteer from California who is (barely) seen here celebrating his twenty-eighth among clouds of flour. ¡Feliz cumpleaños, David!

This is interesting in the light of a string of letters in the Dear Abby column about pushing people's faces into birthday cakes. One lady said it was a Mexican custom and people upset by it should just lighten up. Others were quite disturbed by what they considered an abusive practice. And of course we have our cake force feeding at weddings here in the U.S. I wonder how these customs get started?
Love, Mom
